  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Joel M -- Scholarly work, accessible to all : Mitch Wilson, a prominent psychoanalyst, has written a wonderful volume about the psychoanalytic process that provides a new way of looking at the interaction between analyst and patient that is both humane and wise. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from sarah ackerman -- Radical New Perspective on the Clinician's Subjectivity : This outstanding book makes the claim that the psychoanalyst’s desire—long disavowed—is an essential ingredient in the analytic process. Resistance, countertransference, clinical impasses, and termination—all are reconceptualized when an equal share is given to the role of the analyst, and the play of her unconscious. The analyst's desire serves as the ethical rudder, requiring that the analyst acknowledge and tend to her desire as it guides the entire process. Concise and compelling clinical examples appear in each chapter, fleshing out instances in which both Wilson and his patients are brought up short by words that suddenly take on new meaning, rendering the entire relationship between them in a new light. The book’s strength is its capacity to reposition the contemporary focus on the analyst’s personhood within a comprehensive, post-Lacanian, Freudian perspective, tilting our fascination with our own impact on the work in the direction of ethical responsibility. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from jonathan Dunn -- A Theoretical and practical orientation for all relation-based psychotherapy : I challenge any reader of the preface of "The Analyst's Desire" and not want to see what else the author has to say about psychoanalytic theory and therapy. It is both deeply personal and profoundly theoretical, which, along with its outstanding, sophisticated writing style, makes it a penetrating insight into the analytic therapist's subjectivity as she engages with those seeking her help. In this sense, each chapter serves as a mirror to the ways the analyst's self-preoccupation and self-regard (as opposed to that of the patient's )inhibits the healing process of analytic treatment. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from D. -- On the Leading Edge of American Psychoanalysis : Reading Wilson’s ( Reviewed in the United States on November 17, 2020 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Neal Vorus -- A Remarkable Achievement in Psychoanalytic Writing : Mitchell Wilson’s book is a remarkable achievement. It is simultaneously personally and deeply engaging, clinically informative, theoretically enriching, and perhaps most importantly, it is an absolute pleasure to read. I can’t recall ever before encountering a psychoanalytic book that I would describe as a “page-turner,” and certainly not one characterized by such theoretical erudition and clinical richness. The book pulls the reader in like the best of fiction writing, and it offers a deeply informative view of clinical process from the intersection of Lacan, Freud, Bion, Renik, and others (not always the easiest of bedfellows). This unexpected cross-fertilization of psychoanalytic perspectives yields an approach to analytic listening and practice that is at once theoretically rigorous and deeply personal. From beginning to the end, it is the personal nature of this book, Wilson’s very distinctive voice, that carries the reader along. As he writes at the very beginning of the second chapter, “the psychoanalyst is a caretaker, a host, an innkeeper.” This is clearly also the case of the writer, if that writer is Mitchell Wilson. I could not recommend this book more highly. ( Reviewed in the United States on June 4, 2021 )
